The village of Accettura along the ridge, surrounded by woods and fields.

Accettura · Basilicata — Gallipoli Cognato and Piccole Dolomiti Lucane Park

Dimora Lo Scalzo

Four rooms. A place worth discovering.

Here the stay begins at the Dimora and continues outside: through trails and alleyways, the Dolomiti Lucane, and a rite that every Whitsun brings a tree up to thirty metres tall into the centre of the village.

The Dimora

Four rooms, and hospitality on a human scale.

Dimora Lo Scalzo is a small place, made for people who prefer somewhere with a character of its own to a large hotel.

There are only four rooms. That scale lets us give our guests real attention, and offer something we consider part of the stay: getting to know Accettura, the park, and what is genuinely worth seeing nearby.

Four rooms

Four separate rooms, each furnished individually, with private bathroom and Wi-Fi. Every room keeps a character of its own, with the space and the services you need for a simple, comfortable stay.

The stay, beyond the room

The park, the trails, the places to visit, what is on in the village: we are here to help you plan your days and get to know the area, starting from whatever actually interests you.

Accettura

A village that deserves to be crossed on foot

Accettura lies inside the Gallipoli Cognato and Piccole Dolomiti Lucane Regional Park: 27,027 hectares of woods, watercourses and sandstone ridges spread across five municipalities. But before heading out into the park, it is worth stopping here.

In the oldest part of the village you will find Vicoletto Pozzo, a passage barely about 42 centimetres wide. Not far away, the murals tell of one of the deepest bonds between this community and its land. On the façade of the town hall, in 1976, the artist Constantin Udroiu painted a large fresco dedicated to the Maggio di Accettura. Then come the churches, the palazzi, the glimpses of the old centre. And just beyond the last houses, the woods begin.

Accettura is not simply where you sleep. It is part of the journey.

The Maggio di Accettura

At Whitsun, a tree is raised here.

It all begins in the woods. At Montepiano they choose il Maggio, a great Turkey oak. In the Gallipoli Cognato forest they choose la Cima, a holly. Over the days of Whitsun both make their way to Accettura, but very differently: the Maggio arrives hauled by oxen, while the Cima is carried on shoulders for some fifteen kilometres.

Once they reach the village the two trees are prepared, joined, and finally raised. The trunk can stand thirty metres tall. Then comes the procession of Saint Julian and, on the Tuesday afternoon, the climb: men and boys work their way up the Maggio to the Cima in front of the whole village. It is the most spectacular moment of a far more complex rite, one that has bound woodland, devotion and community together for generations.

People often call it “the marriage of the trees”. Telling it helps you understand it. Being there is something else.

Would you like to experience the Maggio?

Things to do nearby

You start at the Dimora. Then you pick a direction.

Accettura's electric bike station, bikes charging at their docks.
  1. Walking in the park

The Montepiano woods, the Gallipoli Cognato forest, valleys, ridges and trails deep in the vegetation. The park offers routes of varying length and difficulty. You can set out for a couple of hours or give a whole day to walking. You do not have to go far for the landscape to change completely.

  2. The park by bike

Back roads, gravel tracks and trails run right across the park. The network includes routes given over to cycling, and e-bike points: another way to move between Accettura, the woods and the neighbouring villages.

  3. Castelmezzano and Pietrapertosa

Two villages built among the sandstone spires of the Dolomiti Lucane. Castelmezzano and Pietrapertosa can be visited in the same day, along the Sentiero delle Sette Pietre — the Path of the Seven Stones — or by choosing one of the experiences that have made this stretch of Basilicata among the most recognisable in the region. In the evening you come back to Accettura.

  4. Matera, in a day

The Sassi of Matera are about 82 kilometres away. Close enough to give them a day; far enough that coming back to Accettura changes the pace entirely.
